During the month of March, you may see a lot of blue ribbons floating around and wonder what they mean. This is because March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness month. Colorectal cancer is one of the top three cancers diagnosed for both men and women, and so to help bring awareness to this rampant illness, you may want to schedule a visit to your periodontist. This is because gum disease and diseases such as cancer may actually be related.
Gum disease occurs when there is a buildup of bacteria on the teeth and gums. Brushing and flossing helps to break away the bacteria, but you also need regular visits to a dental professional to maintain your dental health. If you let the bacteria remain in your mouth, it can lead to swelling, bleeding, and gum recession. In addition, you are constantly swallowing the bad bacteria and increasing your risk for heart disease and other complications.
There have been studies that show that bacteria in the mouth related to gum disease is also linked to a gut microbe that is present in those with colorectal cancer. It is not yet known if gum disease is leading to the development of such cancers, but even knowing there is a link between the two can be disconcerting. In addition, you need to have good oral health to qualify for some treatments for advanced diseases – and especially if you need a transplant.
There are a few ways to treat gum disease. Regular cleanings are the most common along with root planing and scaling to get rid of tartar and calculus. Advanced treatment includes laser gum treatment and even gum grafts to combat gum recession.
You should not have to deal with oral health issues when you have a bigger fight against other bodily diseases. However, a visit to Dr. J. Robert Friedberg may help keep you in better health as you receive other treatments. Contact our office today to learn more.
